Course Description
We have been in awe of the rise in the number of inventive ceramic artists who are making delightful imaginary beings out of clay. So, we decided it was time to introduce a handbuilding class where students can create their own fantastic clay creatures, critters, and figures. In this class, students will learn how to plan, execute, and glaze small-scale ceramic sculptures they design. Over the six weeks, we explore how to create expressions through size, features and proportion. We will also cover methods for hollowing, moisture management, surface detailing and texturing, as well as how to isolate colored areas when painting glazes. Students with previous experience in a range of handbuilding techniques will find this class most rewarding. Included with this course: - Open studio time to practice throwing on your own each week. Please see the Student Practice page on the website for current practice hours. - 25 pounds of clay (including firing and glazing). - Basic tools for your use during class. (Bring a towel and apron if you like.) (There are no make up classes for this course. If you need to miss a class, speak with your instructor about what you will miss. Try to get extra studio practice that week, and follow any guidelines for learning what you will miss that your instructor may have for you.)
