Course Description
Discover the timeless elegance of Blue & White Porcelain painting in this hands-on workshop led by Yunting Li, ceramic artist and Advanced Glaze Designer at Laguna Clay & Glaze Company. Yunting brings a deep cross-cultural foundation to her teaching, having trained in the two historic centers of porcelain artistry: - Jingdezhen, China — where she earned her B.A. at Jingdezhen Ceramic University, the world’s porcelain capital - Arita, Japan — where she completed her M.A. at Saga University, birthplace of Japanese porcelain Her workshops across the country regularly sell out, welcoming artists eager to learn traditional cobalt brushwork and the expressive language of Blue & White painting. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN - Cobalt underglaze techniques - Traditional Chinese and Japanese brushwork - Line work, shading, and tonal control - Composition planning for Blue & White designs - Painting on porcelain surfaces with confidence and flow Through demonstrations and guided practice, participants will explore a variety of underglaze painting techniques, from transferring designs from paper onto porcelain surfaces to using washisome rice-paper methods that allow anyone — even complete beginners — to create beautifully detailed patterns with ease. PORCELAIN PIECES AND MATERIALS Participants are warmly encouraged to bring their own cone 5/6 porcelain bisque pieces to decorate. We recommend using Laguna Clay Porcelain Frost. Yunting will also bring a curated selection of cone 5/6 porcelain tiles, cups, vases, bowls, and plates handmade by her, available for purchase at the workshop for those who’d like to paint on one of her forms. All cobalt underglaze materials will be provided. BRUSHES Traditional Blue & White painting brushes will also be provided for use during the workshop, and authentic brushes will be available for purchase if you’d like to continue practicing at home. You're welcome to bring your own brushes. FIRING & PICKUP Your fired piece will be ready for pickup 3–5 weeks after the workshop.
