Sculpt Stories, Creatures, and Characters in Clay
Available spots
Course Description
Join a growing community of ceramic artists exploring character, storytelling, and imagination through clay. In this tabletop sculpture handbuilding course, students design and create their own fantastic figures, critters, and creatures while developing strong sculptural fundamentals. Over six weeks, we focus on planning and building small-scale ceramic sculptures with intention—learning how size, proportion, and surface detail influence expression and personality. Students will explore methods for hollowing forms, managing moisture, and maintaining structural integrity, as well as techniques for texturing and refining surfaces. The course also covers glazing strategies for sculptural work, including how to isolate color areas and enhance form through thoughtful glaze application. By the end of the session, students will have completed expressive, well-crafted ceramic creatures that reflect both technical growth and personal creative vision. Students with previous experience in a range of handbuilding techniques will find this class most rewarding. Each weekly class is two hours long - which breaks out to an affordable cost of $49/week. Class size limited to 8. Included with this course: - Open studio time to practice creating on your own each week. Please see the Student Practice page on the website for current practice hours. - 25 pounds of clay (including firing and glazing). - Basic tools for your use during class. (Bring a towel and apron if you like.) (There are no make up classes for this course. If you need to miss a class, speak with your instructor about what you will miss. Try to get extra studio practice that week, and follow any guidelines for learning what you will miss that your instructor may have for you.)
