Design in Handbuilding - WED 6:00PM S726

Course Description

Design in Handbuilding is an intermediate handbuilding course for students who are ready to move beyond assigned projects and begin developing their own ideas in clay. Rather than having everyone make the same piece, students work with the instructor to plan and build projects based on their individual interests and goals. Bring sketches, photos, reference materials, or simply an idea you'd like to explore. Projects can be functional, sculptural, decorative, or somewhere in between. As projects develop, students explore more advanced handbuilding techniques such as hard slab construction, template making, extruded forms, larger-scale building methods, surface decoration, glazing strategies, and structural problem-solving. Demonstrations, discussions, and one-on-one instruction are tailored to the projects being developed in class. Projects are typically sized to fit within a 12" x 12" x 12" space. Because students bring different ideas and goals, every session is different. Many students return for multiple sessions, developing new projects and continuing to expand their skills. This course is intended for students who have completed Pinch, Slab, Sculpt!, Creating with Coils, or have equivalent handbuilding experience. Included with this course: - Open studio time to practice and work on your own each week between classes. Please see the Student Practice page on the website for current practice hours. - 25 pounds of clay (including firing and glazing). - Basic tools for your use during class. (Bring a towel and apron if you like.) (There are no makeup classes for this course. If you need to miss a class, speak with your instructor about what you will miss. Try to get extra studio practice that week and follow any guidelines for learning what you will miss that your instructor may have for you.)
