Course Description

Pinch, Slab, Sculpt is a six-week introductory handbuilding course focused on foundational ceramic construction techniques. Students work with smooth white stoneware to build functional and sculptural pieces using pinch, slab, and slump-molding methods. The course emphasizes form, proportion, and surface, with opportunities to explore texture through tools and hand-applied techniques. Projects may include mugs, vases, soap dishes, and small sculptural forms, allowing room for both guided instruction and individual expression. Classes meet weekly for two hours and are suitable for beginners as well as experienced potters looking to refine handbuilding skills. Enrollment is limited to eight students to ensure focused instruction. Included with this course: - Open studio time to practice throwing on your own each week. Please see the Student Practice page on the website for current practice hours. - 25 pounds of clay (including firing and glazing). - Basic tools for your use during class. (Bring a towel and apron if you like.) (There are no makeup classes for this course. If you need to miss a class, speak with your instructor about what you will miss. Try to get extra studio practice that week and follow any guidelines for learning what you will miss that your instructor may have for you.)
