Course Description
Potter’s Wheel Basics focuses on building the core skills of wheel throwing over six weeks at Throw Clay LA. Designed for beginners and those returning to strengthen their practice, this hands-on course develops the control and consistency needed to work confidently on the wheel. Students practice centering, opening, pulling walls, shaping functional forms, and trimming for finishing. Basic glazing is introduced so work can be completed and fired. Each class meets once a week for two hours, with experienced instructors offering demonstrations, guidance, and individualized feedback as skills develop over time. Students are encouraged to return to the studio between classes during open studio hours—regular practice is key to progress on the wheel. Class size is limited to eight students, allowing for personalized instruction and a supportive learning environment. Included with Potter's Wheel Basics - Weekly two-hour class with expert instruction - Open studio time each week to practice throwing on your own (see the Student Practice page for current hours) - 25 pounds of clay, including firing and glazing - Basic tools provided for use during class (bring a towel and apron if you like)
