Course Description

Sculpting with Coils is a six-week introductory course focused on handbuilding with traditional coil techniques. Students learn how to roll, join, and shape coils to construct both open and closed forms. Instruction explores different approaches to surface and structure, including compression, blending, and leaving coils visible as part of the design. As the session progresses, students develop an understanding of how coils can be used to build larger forms while maintaining strength and balance. The course emphasizes thoughtful construction and form development, allowing students to work at a steady pace while exploring their own ideas. Sculpting with Coils is suitable for beginners as well as experienced potters who want to deepen their handbuilding skills. Each class meets once a week for two hours with experienced instructors who provide demonstration, guidance, and individualized feedback as students work. Students are encouraged to return to the studio between classes during open studio hours to continue developing their projects. Included: - Weekly 2-hour class with expert instruction - Open studio time to practice throwing on your own each week. Please see the Student Practice page on the website for current practice hours. - 25 pounds of clay (including firing and glazing). - Basic tools for your use during class. (Bring a towel and apron if you like.) - Small class size (limited to 8 students) (There are no make up classes for this course. If you need to miss a class, speak with your instructor about what you will miss. Try to get extra studio practice that week, and follow any guidelines for learning what you will miss that your instructor may have for you.)
