Course Description

Throwing Big is designed for students who are ready to work with larger amounts of clay on the pottery wheel. This six-week course focuses on developing the skills needed to successfully throw larger functional forms. Students learn how to manage additional clay while maintaining control and balance on the wheel. Instruction focuses on techniques for centering heavier amounts of clay, pulling taller walls, shaping larger forms, and trimming bigger pieces. Throughout the session, students gradually increase the amount of clay they work with. The class typically progresses through forms made with approximately three, five, and eight pounds of clay as students build confidence working on a larger scale. This course is best suited for students who are already comfortable throwing on the wheel. Students who can consistently center two pounds of clay and throw a two-pound cylinder with even walls will be most successful in this class. Each class meets once a week for two hours with experienced instructors who provide demonstration, guidance, and individualized feedback as students practice. Students are encouraged to return to the studio between classes during open studio hours to continue developing their skills. Included with this Throwing Big class: - Open studio time to practice throwing on your own each week. Please see the Practice Time link on the website for current practice hours - 35 pounds of clay (including firing and glazing) - Small class size (limited to 8 students) - Basic tools for your use during class.
