Vases & Bottles - THU 7:30PM S426
Thursday Series: Part 1 - Shaping

Available spots
Course Description
Vases & Bottles focuses on shaping form on the wheel—specifically how to widen, contain, and control volume. If you can throw a cylinder or bowl but struggle to push the walls outward, pull height with intention, collar in a neck, or avoid collapse, this course will help you understand what’s happening in the clay and how to respond with control. Over six weeks, you’ll work through a progression of vase forms, developing the ability to shape smooth, continuous curves and build cohesive profiles from base to neck. Emphasis is placed on managing wall thickness during expansion, refining proportions, and creating strong transitions between forms. You’ll learn how to collar and define necks, push and shape bellies, and trim narrow-necked pieces using a chuck. Glazing is approached as part of the form, with attention to how surface enhances shape. Through a series of variations on core forms, you’ll build consistency, control, and confidence on the wheel. Open studio time is strongly encouraged to support your progress. This course includes: - Open studio time to practice throwing on your own each week. -Monday through Thursday 11am-8pm -Saturday and Sunday 11am-7pm (No practice on Fridays) - 25 pounds of clay (including firing and glazing). - Basic tools for your use during class. (Bring a towel and apron if you like.)
